Imagine you had a supercomputer with all the latest and greatest hardware and software, but you only used it to check emails with. What if you learned to use it more efficiently and explore all of its parts? This dynamic and exciting exploration is the substance of Miss Sonya’s  C.R.E.A.T.E. program: Her program is designed to provide knowledge and tools about the world of the brain and cognitive neuroscience.

In a traditional educational system students are expected to pay attention, but never really taught the strategies to do it. Now, we find, attention is under siege more than it has ever been in human history. We have more distractions than ever before. Because of this, there is a great need to cultivate the skills of attention. Like Daniel Goleman, author of Focus: The Hidden Driver of excellence we believe, “The ability to concentrate is the strongest predictor of success. This ability is more important than IQ or the socio economic status of the family you grew up in for determining career success, financial success and health.”

Building attention skills is the emphasis of Miss Sonya’s program. Her science curriculum, developed upon cognitive neuroscience and elements of physics, as well as various focus techniques, builds and develops high levels of self-efficacy and executive function skills.

These skills become apparent when you see her students working in groups and on hands-on activities.

Walking into Miss Sonya’s room is like taking a magic carpet ride. Teaching the children from ages 3-12 techniques for focusing the mind that were developed at Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment is her passion. She also uses strategies for calming the mind and body from the Mind Up curriculum and Mindful Schools and is incorporating the newest elements to the curriculum from courses taken at Learning & the Brain.

The program is designed to provide knowledge and tools about the world of the brain and cognitive neuroscience.

You will also find students of all ages working in small groups, on the archery field, in the name field, or in nature exploring and  practicing team building activities where they learn:

self-awareness

self-management

self-reflection

neuroplasticity

neuroanatomy

focus techniques

mindful thinking and learning

These qualities are built upon through activities like:

Candle Focus – learning to quiet the mind and practice deliberately holding a single thought

Analogical Archery – connecting and building intentional brain-body communication and demonstrate impact of intentional focus

Mindfulness exercises – developing a relationship with our thoughts, others and our environment

Opportunities exist to apply these skills daily in practical situations to increase confidence, with support from facilitators, as students develop a growth mindset and learn to trust themselves and their decision making.

The Ultimate joy for Miss Sonya is “to foster and nurture each student’s creativity and individuality, self-efficacy and joy – all of which can be wired in the brain. Excellence and talent isn’t born. It’s grown and can be intentionally developed.”
