Greetings friends!


My name is Jean McCrary. I am the teacher for the students in the 6 to 9 year old classroom.  


My room is a lively place. I love coming to work because children always keep things fresh and new. I keep many things on hand, ready for that impromptu, “teachable moment.”

Good matches for my room are eager and enthusiastic learners who understand that older students might be doing more because they have been practicing longer! They also have the stamina to be able to sustain learning for longer periods of time without the need for additional creative play periods.  The visitor to my room may see students scattered about the room, working in the area that suits them. Children talk and share their learning during their activity. Students learn procedures at the beginning of the year that help them to be more independent in their learning. We do our best to develop a strong learning community with lots of love and caring.

My room is a lively place.



Guided Reading (Fountas- Pinnell) – This is the foundation for our reading instruction. Each child receives small group instruction at his/her “Just Right” level.


Daily 5 (Moser and Boushey) – An organized set of literacy selections and procedures for children to engage when they are not in session with a teacher. 2 rounds per day.


Making Words (Hall and Cunningham) Children construct words with a set of letter cards guided by a teacher. This is the important underpinning for good spelling skills.


Writers Workshop (Lucy Calkins) We incorporate this curriculum into our Daily 5 practice. Children choose what they want to write, and learn the first steps of the Writing Process, Authors meet individually in conference with a teacher as writing progresses.


Handwriting (Zaner Bloser) A progressive and systematic method that helps to hone legibility.





Everyday Mathematics-  


Marilyn Burns Math Games & Supplements: Marilyn Burns is one of today’s most highly respected mathematics educators. Her supplements are a foundation for many of our math games and extended studies.




Science FOSS Kits – Full Option Science Systems. Students learn hands-on and by observation.


Social Emotional Learning:


Non-Violent Communication – Human beings are always trying to honor universal values and needs, every minute, every day. With NVC, we learn to hear our own deeper needs and those of others.
